Emergence is the process by which complex systems and patterns arise from relatively simple interactions. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts — consciousness from neurons, culture from individuals, ecosystems from organisms. In metamodern thinking, emergence points to the self-organizing capacity of complex systems to generate novelty and higher orders of coherence.
