Definition

Metaontology is the study of the nature, foundations, and methodology of ontology — the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of being and existence. It is concerned with questions about the scope of ontological inquiry: whether ontological questions can be meaningfully answered, how ontological knowledge can be acquired, and what criteria determine the truth or falsity of ontological claims.

The goal of meta-ontology is to clarify what ontology is about and how to interpret the meaning of ontological claims. Different meta-ontological theories disagree on what the goal of ontology is and whether a given issue or theory lies within its scope. It is closely related to metaphysics, epistemology, and logic.
