Damanhur is an intentional community and ecovillage in northern Italy known for its underground temples, spiritual research, and experiments in sustainable living.
Damanhur is a federation of spiritual communities located in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, founded in 1975 by Oberto Airaudi (known as Falco Tarassaco). It is renowned for the Temples of Humankind, an extraordinary underground complex of halls carved into the alpine foothills over decades, decorated with mosaics, stained glass, and murals exploring themes of human spirituality and cosmic connection.
The community functions as a living laboratory for social, artistic, and spiritual research, with its own constitution, currency (the Credito), schools, and governance systems. Damanhur’s work spans areas including sustainable agriculture, alternative energy, art, music therapy, and the study of consciousness. It was recognized by the United Nations as a model for sustainable society.
